History

The Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) has its roots in 1968, when the Higher Polytechnic Institute of Valencia was created. At that time, four centres were integrated: the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineers, established in 1959; the Higher Technical School of Architecture, which had been operating since 1966 as a delegated section of the Barcelona School; the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineers, and the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers, both created in 1968.

In 1970, the Higher Polytechnic Institute moved to the Vera campus, and in 1971, according to Decree 495/1971 of March 11, it was established as a university under the name of Polytechnic University of Valencia. Over the following years, more centres were incorporated into the institution, such as the University School of Computer Science, the Faculty of Computer Science, the Higher Technical School of Geodetic, Cartographic and Topographic Engineering, and the Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineers.

Today, the UPV is a leading university whose strong points are its great research capacity. An example of this is its own scientific park, called the Polytechnic City of Innovation. This large scientific park has been developed on the Vera campus and has a significant group of researchers dedicated to R&D.

 

Innovation at the UPV

The UPV has a strong commitment to R&D. Among other actions, the UPV Innovation programme has been created, which has various units specialised in promoting and channelling relations with companies and institutions.

Some examples of institutions are: i2T, the Polytechnic City of Innovation Foundation, the CPI Europe Programme, the Lifelong Learning Centre, IDEAS UPV, the Integrated Employment Service, the Doctoral School, the Spontaneous Generation programme and the Business Guidance Unit for Innovation (UNOI) of the Valencian Business Confederation. These units work together to generate synergies, establish external collaborations and generate interaction between research groups and direct their activity to benefit companies.
