This is one of the questions we receive most often: I have a high school diploma from another country, I want to study in Spain, is it mandatory to have it validated or can I skip that process? The answer isn't a simple yes or no. It depends on what you want to study, where you're from, and the type of university or institution you want to attend.
In this article we explain precisely in which cases homologation is mandatory, in which cases it is not, and what alternatives exist for each situation.
The general rule: yes, it is mandatory to access university or higher vocational training studies
For most foreign students who want to access a Spanish university, Whether public or private, having the validation of the high school diploma —or the UNEDasiss credential, as the case may be— is a mandatory requirementSpanish universities cannot admit a student with a foreign qualification unless it is officially recognized by the Spanish education system.
This is not a policy of every university: It's a legal framework that binds all universities equally. There's no way around it.
Cases where you don't need to homologate
1. If you are a student from the EU, Colombia, China, or have an IB Diploma
As we already explained in detail in Our article on the difference between homologation and UNEDasiss credentialStudents from European Union countries, Colombia, China, and holders of the International Baccalaureate Diploma have an alternative route: the UNEDasiss credential. They do not need to have their high school diploma validated to access university, but they do need to obtain this other document.
In other words: they are not exempt from the procedure, but the procedure is different and generally faster.
2. If you want to study at non-university training centers
Some private training courses, academies, language schools, bootcamps, and similar programs are not subject to the same admission requirements as universities. Generally, they do not require accreditation for enrollment. If your goal is to train at these types of centers without obtaining an official university degree, accreditation is not a requirement.
3. If you already have a foreign university degree
If you have a university degree from another country and want to pursue a master's or doctoral degree in Spain, the relevant procedure is not the validation of your high school diploma, but rather the admissions process specified by the corresponding university. In that case, the validation of your high school diploma is not what you need to manage.
What if I start without homologation and process it later?
Technically it is possible to start studies at certain centers and process the accreditation in parallel, but this strategy has clear risks:
To enroll in any university, you will be required to have already started the application process.
Some universities allow provisional enrollment with the initial application form if the validation process is not successfully completed before the deadline set by the university, which is usually at the end of the first academic year. the registration may be cancelled and it will be as if you hadn't completed that year.
The deadlines don't always add up.
Homologation may take time Between 3 and 9 monthsIf you start the process when you are already in Spain or very close to the start of the course, you probably won't have enough time.
Some universities do not accept provisional registration.
Especially in Catalonia, but also in other autonomous communities, public universities require final accreditation to formalize enrollment. If you are a student at one of these universities, you cannot begin your studies without having this accreditation sorted. The recommendation is always the same: Start the process as far in advance as possible, without waiting until you are in Spain or have a confirmed place at a university.
The provisional driver's license: how to study while you process the homologation
There is a pathway that allows many students to enroll in university without yet having their degree officially recognized. Once the application is correctly submitted to the Ministry, it is issued. a flyer to initiate the file which most Spanish universities accept to formalize enrollment on a provisional basis.
This guide is especially valuable because it allows you to stay on track while the Ministry processes your application. LegalSpain We'll give you the voucher as soon as it's available so you can use it without delay. From the time you pay for the service, we can have it ready within 24 to 48 hours.
What happens if you enter Spain with a student visa without having your qualifications officially recognized?
The student visa and the validation of your academic credentials are separate processes. You can obtain a student visa without having your credentials validated, but if your goal is to attend a public university, you will eventually need to present your academic recognition. Having the visa does not replace the validation process, nor does it allow you to bypass this university requirement.

Frequently asked questions about studying in Spain without having your high school diploma recognized
Can I enroll in a Spanish university without having my degree validated?
In many universities, yes, provisional enrollment is possible using the initial application form issued by the Ministry once the application has been correctly submitted. However, final enrollment is contingent upon a successful validation of the degree. In some autonomous communities, such as Catalonia, final validation is required from the outset.
Do private universities accept foreign degrees without validation?
No. Private universities are subject to the criteria established by the Ministry of Education in Spain. Therefore, accreditation or UNEDasiss accreditation will always be required, depending on the origin of the studies.
Can I access vocational training without having my high school diploma recognized?
To access higher-level vocational training programs in public centers, you do need to have your high school diploma recognized. The homologation process fulfills this requirement. If you want to access intermediate-level vocational training programs, you will need homologation of the equivalent of compulsory secondary education in Spain.
Does a student visa replace the validation process?
No. They are completely separate procedures. The student visa allows you to enter and reside in Spain as a student, but it has no effect on the academic recognition of your high school diploma.
