History of the UAM
The Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) was founded in 1968, along with the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Bilbao, with the aim of uniting teaching and research in a single institution. From its inception, the UAM has boasted highly experienced professors and has been home to prominent figures in the world of science and the humanities. Initially, the UAM offered five faculties: Law, Philosophy and Letters, Political Science, Economics and Business, Sciences, and Medicine.
In 1970, the Faculty of Medicine was opened in La Paz, with a teaching system based on the integration of theory and clinical practice in public hospitals. A year later, the Cantoblanco Campus was opened, housing the faculties of Philosophy and Letters, Law, Economics and Business Sciences and Sciences, as well as the Faculty of Teacher Training and the Higher Polytechnic School.
The Cantoblanco campus, inspired by American universities, is located away from the city and has large green areas. In addition to offering academic and research activities, the Cantoblanco Campus has a wide variety of services and resources, such as a medical service, a central library, a canteen, a sports centre, a nursery and a kindergarten.
